SHSAT cutoff scores: 2026 and 2025 admissions

The lowest composite score that received an offer at each of the eight schools. The year is the year of 9th-grade entry: students entering in fall 2026 took the SHSAT in fall 2025. The 2026 scores are published by the DOE; the 2025 scores come from public sources. Cutoffs change every year.

SHSAT questions parents ask

What is the SHSAT?

The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test) is the entrance exam for eight of New York City’s nine specialized high schools: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and five more. The ninth, LaGuardia, admits by audition. The test is taken by 8th graders (and first-time 9th-grade testers) and has two sections: English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Seats at these schools are offered by SHSAT score alone.

How is the composite score calculated?

Since fall 2026 the SHSAT is computer-adaptive: each question has a set difficulty, and the result depends on which questions of what difficulty a student answers correctly. The ELA and math results are converted to scaled scores, and their sum is the composite score, which is what gets compared with the cutoffs. Students are ranked by composite score, and each school fills its seats from the top down, following the order in which each student ranked the schools.

What is a cutoff score, and which year are these from?

A cutoff is the lowest composite score that received an offer at a school in that admissions cycle. The calculator and the table show cutoffs for fall 2026 entry (test taken in fall 2025), with 2025 for comparison. The 2026 scores are published by the DOE as the “lowest qualifying score”; the 2025 scores come from public sources (checked November 5, 2026).

What SHSAT score do you need for Stuyvesant?

For 2026 admissions the Stuyvesant cutoff was 561; in 2025 it was 556. That is the highest of the eight schools. The lowest in 2026 was 495 (The Brooklyn Latin School). Your year’s cutoff will be different: it depends on how many students take the test and how they score.

How accurate is the calculator?

The calculator compares your score with past cutoffs — it does not predict your year’s cutoff. Cutoffs move every year: between 2025 and 2026 the largest shift was 13 points, at HS for Math, Science & Engineering (HSMSE). So a score within 15 points of a cutoff is a genuine coin flip. Practice tests use their own scales, and families learn the real score only together with offers.

How do I use the calculator with MySchools?

Students rank the specialized high schools in order of preference when they register for the SHSAT, separately from the main high school list. The calculator shows which of the eight schools are realistic at your practice score and helps you decide the order. Fill in your main MySchools list either way (there is no limit, and the DOE recommends at least 12 programs): only a small share of test takers get a specialized offer, and everyone else is matched through that list.

The SHSAT covers 8 schools. Your list covers 12+.

About 26,000 students take the SHSAT; around 4,000 get a specialized offer. Everyone else gets matched through their MySchools list — and that list deserves the same rigor. See your honest chance at every one of 900+ programs.
